But you might think that just because I hate rap, that means I love rock. That's not true - I do like rock, but not the loud screamo/metal music. My favourite type of music is Jazz.

wtf? you need to read lyrics that arent by 50 cent and Jay z.

Btw, screamo/metal isnt a type of rock music. Rolling Eyes theyre seperate genres.

Well, okay, no need to be mean about it..

sorreh, i get annoyed easily -_-

are you kidding me?
Seriously.

Metal IS a type of rock. it's not a genre, it's a sub genre of rock. so is screamo (which is actually a sub sub genre) so on and so forth.

No, I meant that rock and metal and screamo are all classed as different genre's.

Metal and screamo may be offshoots of rock, but they have distinctly different sounds.

attempting to do poetry? i dont know what type of poetry you read but you obviously have something wrong with you if you can say that they yell. They SPEAK their minds. No yelling is involved like metal or screamo songs.

'Opinion' is a word some people need to learn around here. I have something wrong with me? Well, that's a kind thing to say.

*Sigh* I try to be nice, but what's it get ya? I'm off to The3Eds. At least people are over there are smart enough to handle a single opinion without having a spaz.

No they're not whole genre's in their entirety.

they're all sub genre's of rock. They're all classified as rock, the main genre then shoot off into smaller sub-genre's. Not distinct enough to call them a genre in the whole aspect.

no, different SUB-genre's.
the only genre in it is Rock, then split into SUB-genre's. not full genre's. SUB-Genre's.

Say I go into HMV.

If I look in Sub-Genres I get like soft rock, heavy rock, indie rock.

Yet if I look in Genre, I get Metal, Rock and so forth...?

rock-rockibilly-Punk-hardcore punk
street punk
classic punk
Soft punk- 80's glam rock
-Emotive hardcore

hardcore - screamo
Classic rock- Metal- hair metal
Death metal
black metal
heavy metal
melodic metal

grunge-atl. rock

see it's hard to show with this (it's not 100%accurate due to not being able to do it right, and music has so many different influences and changes, it's hard to link everything)

but the main GENRE is rock, after that is a SUB genre. followed by more sub genre's (or sub, sub genre's.)

edit:my whole diagram goes to hell when i press submit =[

example-

say you go into a store. They usually have the areas by main genre. rock, pop, blues, rap etc.
in those sections , sometimes they're split into metal, pop-punk, grunge all that. they don't get their own full section, they all share under the rock genre section because they themselves aren't full genre's.

Surely this discussion of "sub-genres" and even "genres" themselves is purely semantics?

It should be the music itself that you like or dislike, not the label attached to it.

I don't like Rap/Hip-hop because it just doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. Some of the beats on some of the songs though are actually quite nice; otherwise, not for me.

Well, those are their reasons. Some people apparently have the same reasons. That is not surprsing at all. Usually when something is liked or disliked, the general consenus for those reasons are often similar.
