Alright. This is my first attempt at a Fanfiction in several years so...go easy on me, comments and enjoy!

~~~~Heart Shaped Box Chapter One
Adelayde Anete Adams looked out of the bay windows of her bedroom. This would be the last time that she could enjoy the view. The beautiful maple trees and the apple orchard below, the leaves already turning to yellows, golds, and reds. It was only August 23 but fall had come early this year to Massachusetts. It was what she would miss most. The wonderful trees this time of year. Adelayde could remember playing Hide-and-go-Seek in that orchard, with Mom, and Dad and Brian, her older brother. But they were gone now.
They had been killed in an attack working for the American Association for Magical Peoples (A.K.A. AAMP, or the American version of the Ministry of Magic). The three of them were Aurors and had been called away in the middle of the night and they didn't return. A week had gone by until someone showed up at Adelayde's home (she had been home alone all that time) to tell her that her family was dead. Killed off by You Know Who's followers, the Death Eaters. She would never see them again.
"And now," Adelayde thought to herself, "I must go and live with a grandmother I've never ehard of, let alone met, in a whole different country. And I'm only just thirteen!" Since her mother, father, and brother were her only true close relatives, the AAMP decided to send her away from everything she knew and make her live with a grandmother that she had never been informed of existing.
Sighing, Adelayde picked up her bag and, after taking one last look around her room, she shut the door on everything she knew.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~******************************~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The flight to London took..all in all...an eternity....at least that's how it felt. Now Adelayde found herself in the backseat of a backwards car going on the wrong side of the road. Driving the car was a man of mid-fourties, by the name of James. He was tall, and not bad looking, for an old guy. James had informed her that he was basicly her grandmother's butler, and that her grandmother had been unable to retreiv Adelayde herself because of prior business that 'must be attended to'. But he assured Adelayde that her grandmother would be home by the time they made it back to the house. He also informed her that her grandmother was a professor at Hogwarts. Adelayde knew about Wizard school (of course she knew, she was a witch) but she had never been to one. She had always been homeschooled in the Old Ways.

A two hour drive from London and Adelayde was driving in a beautiful country side, complete with rolling hills, lush green crops, and farms. The trees were in full bloom, the fall-like weather of home hadn't yet hit here.

Adelayde was surprised when James turned onto a gravel driveway leading up to a lonely hill. There was a large stone wall surrounding the property that seemed to go on forever. Beyond the gates the gravel drive continued on to the top of the hill, surounded on either side by cherry blossom trees.

"Uhhh, James? Where are we? I don't see-Oh!" Adelayde shouldn't have been surprised but she was. The house, or rather mansion, appeared just as James drove the car through the gate.

He said, "This house was built by your grandfather for your grandmother as a wedding gift. He was killed a few years later, three months before your father was born. After your father....left, your grandmother started living full time at Hogwarts. She only just came back, when she heard you were coming to live with her."

James parked the car and was opening the door before Adelayde had a chance to do so herself. "Your grandmother is waiting for you in the parlor for tea." Adelayde nodded and stepped into the house.

Once through the door Adelayde found herself in a large foyer with doors leading off of it to the left and right. Straight ahead was a large winding staircase. She had no idea where to go.

"Miss Adams! It is a pleasure miss!" came a screich of a voice from behind her.

Jumping, Adelayde turned and saw a house elf wearing a stocking cap and four brightly colored socks on both feet standing before her. "Dobby the House Elf miss. Please, follow me. Mistress is waiting in the parlor."

Adelayde allowed Dobby to show her through a door to the left. This door opened up onto a long hall with bright windows and about five hundred portraits lining both walls. The people in the portraits were pointing at her and whispering. Adelayde began to feel out of place. She didn't belong here. It was obvious.

At the end of the hall Dobby motioned for Adelayde to open the door. She did so and found a woman sitting on a small couch holding a cup of tea. She was very regall looking and Minerva McGonagall definetly fullfilled the role of Professor, even at home.

As soon as she saw Adelayde, Minerva stood and wrapped her up in the biggest, warmest hug that Adelayde had ever encountered. Her grandmother smelled of pepermint and "Oh, how I've missed you! I haven't seen you since you were a baby. Please, sit, have some tea!" Minerva sat and pulled Adelayde down next to her. Any feelings of unease left Adelayde at once.

"Now, I see you've already met Dobby. He works in the kitchens at Hogwarts and offered to come here and help me prepare the house for your arrival. He's just finished putting all of your things in your room." Minerva said handing her a cup of tea.

After taking a sip of tea Adelayde said, "Thank you."She tried to catch herself before yawning, but none the less it escaped her.

Minerva smiled and said, "You must be exhausted from your trip. There are a few things I must tell you. First off, you will be attending Hogwarts school. You will be given a placement exam and will be privatly sorted so that you don't have to go up in front of the entire school and be sorted with the first years. We will also be leaving in a few days to go to Hogwarts so that you can learn your way around the school and meet your teachers."

Adelayde nodded, stiffling a yawn behind her hand.

Minerva smiled apologetically and said, "Come I will show you to your room." She stood and led Adelayde through the hall of portraits once more, who of course began to whisper and point at her.

"You are welcome everywhere in this house except the attic, and that is because the floor is weak and you may fall through. Your room is located on the third floor." As they stepped onto the spiral staircase it began to move upward, like an escalator.

The different levels of the house were nothing more than simple doors leading off the stairs. Adelayde counted three when the stairs came to a rest.

Minerva led her through the door into a light yellow, brightly lit corridor. There were only two doors. A set of white double doors on the left and right. A closer look at the doors showed a light silver etching across them. The etchings began to move, forming words in a language that Adelayde coudn't understand. Then very suddenly a thousand soft, beautiful voices whispering filled her ears. "What is that?" she asked reaching out to trace the the etchings. At her touch they felt like liquid, but just as suddenly they appeared back in their original places, and the voices were gone.

Minerva must not have heard her, because she opened the doors on the left. Within was a short hall that opened up into a brightly lit siting room. The walls were lined with bookshelves full of books. The wall that faced the east had two large floor-to-ceiling windows that had thin white curtains hanging from them. on the wall to the right was a lage stone fire place, in front of which was a large, squishy, comfy looking love seat.

"I was told you enjoy books, so I thought this room would be best suited for you." Minerva said as she showed Adelayde the bedroom off to the left.

"I love reading!" She exclaimed.

The bed was a king size canopy bed with white, light pale pink, and light pale baby blue bed clothes. The walls were pale blue and there was a balcony off of the wall to the right. "Now. I'll leave you to nap." Minerva hugged her one last time and turned to leave.

Five minutes later Adelayde was fast asleep, snuggled under her covers.

Thank you very much!
I can't take all of the credit though. Without my Beta reader it wouldn't be near as good.

Adelayde

Chapter Two

Three days after Adelayde had arrived at Adams Manor, she, Minerva, and Dobby made their way to Hogwarts. That was five days ago, and by now Adelayde knew the location of all of her classes, and she knew all of her teachers.

Adelayde had been privately sorted into Gryffindor and had been sleeping alone in the girl's dormitory.

"It's so....quiet..."She told Nearly Headless Nick and the Fat Lady, her new found companions.

"Don't worry," they had both reassured her. "Once the students get here you will be CRAVING the silence. and you'll have plenty of friends."

As Adelayde layed in bed, it must've been well past midnight-already the first of September, she began to worry. What if she didn't fit in? Of course she knew the customs and rules of the school, but none the less, she was an American. And not to mention had been used to being taught magic in 'unethical, un modern ways' as the Magical Governments had deemed the Old Ways. What if they didn't like her? What if...What if she spent the rest of her school years alone....What if....?

~~~~
"Hey Adams!" shouted a blonde boy as Adelayde made her pass a group of Slytherins.
"Yes?" Adelayde turned to the boy. He was tall, thin, but not underfed. He had light blonde hair and sick-colored skin.
"Is it true you cry in your sleep?" The boy leaned down into her face and adopted a 'girl' voice. "Mummy, Daddy, come back! Brian no!!! Don't leave me!" The group of Slytherins sneered and laughed. Tears rolled down Adelayde's face and she turned to run but the blonde boy gripped her by the arm and said nastily, "You'll get what's coming to you."
"Malfoy! Back off!" Shouted a dark haired girl from behind him. The boy let go of Adelayde and she stumbled back, falling to the ground, scraping her hand in the process. The girl that had shouted at Malfoy shoved past him and reached down to help Adelayde up.
"Yeah go on you. You nasty little mudblood." The boy turned and left with his friends.
The girl helped Adelayde pick up her books. "My name is Hermione. I'm in Gryffindor too."
Adelayde smiled. "I'm Adelayde. Thank you for the help. Who was that boy?" Hermione and Adelayde made their way back towards the Tower.
"His name is Draco Malfoy. And he's nastier than a dung beetle."
This made Adelayde laugh. As the girls made their way back, Hermione did most fo the talking. Telling Adelyade all about her life with muggle parents. Adelayde was glad Hermione was filling the silence. She wasn't sure she could talk about her home life, with the loss of everyone still hanging in the air like the smell of roting flesh.
When they stepped through the portrait Hermione made her way over to a table in front of the window, where a dark haired boy and a red haired boy sat playing Wizard Chess.
"I've made a new friend." Hermione announced. The boys looked up and the one with red hair said "Yeah. Is it a new cat? After all Crookshanks ran off with Scabbers. Filthy pig with hair, murderer."
Hermione smiled to Adelayde, who was beginning to feel uncomfortable. "Ronald has lost his rat and is blaming it on Crookshanks, my cat. And Crookshanks hasn't run off, he's hunting."
"Yeah, he's hunting Scabbers!" The boy named Ron shouted.
Hermione shook her head and spoke to the dark haired boy "Harry, this is Adelayde. Adelayde, this is Harry."
Harry smiled a smile like none that Adelayde had ever seen before. It lit his bright green eyes, making Adelayde blush, shyly she looked down and mumbled a hello.
"Hello. Adelayde. I like your name."
This made her blush even deeper, but before she could respond, a boy with dark skin came running into the Common Room shouting "He's been sighted He's been sighted! Sirius Black!"
"Where Dean?" Hermione asked the boy as he slammed the newspaper down onto the table.
"Dufftown." He said panting. Adelayde had no idea who Sirius Black was, but she could tell that he wasn't good. Everyone around the table, especially Harry, went pale as snow, and all had a look of worry on their faces.
In a shaking voice she said, "Sorry...but...who's Sirius Black?"
There was a silence. A long one. No one looked up from the paper and Adelayde thought maybe they hadn't heard her, but then Ron spoke "He's a psycho-murderous-raving-lunatic."
Adelayde furrowed her brow. "What do you mean?"
An hour later Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dean and Adelayde all sat in a circle on the floor in front of the fire.
"And after You-Know-Who fell from power Black went crazy. He killed something like fifteen people with one spell. And now that he's escaped...he's after Harry." Dean finished.
"Why is he after Harry?" Adelayde asked. Everyone gaped at her. She wondered what it was she had said.
"He's the Boy Who Lived." Hermione said. "Haven't you ever heard the story?"
Adelayde shook her head no. "I mean....I've heard about how Voldemort fell but...never WHO it was that got rid of him."
"I did." Harry spoke up for the first time since Dean had began talking. He looked extremely pale. Like he wasn't feeling well. He opened his mouth to say more but Ron cut him off.
"Oi! It's time for dinner! Let's go eat!"
Unfortunatly I only have the first two chapters finished, but I'm working on the third, whenever I finish a chpater I send it to my BETA, Jessica and she revises it, then I post it. So hang tight, there will be more chapters soon.
And I plan on taking the story all the way to book seven, but only if I get enough readers.
THANKSOMUCHFORREADING!!!
I was hoping for more replies to chpater two before posting chpater three but here ya go!
Please don't let the story die, and please tell us what you think!!!
Days soon were turning into months as Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Adelayde became very close friends, and the famous trio considered her one of them. There was, of course, fighting between Ron and Hermione, but for the most part the four of them could get along....so long as Ron and Hermione weren't around each other. Because it was so tiring for Harry and Adelayde to be around both Ron and Hermione while not making the other feel left out. Harry and Adelayde often just spent time, alone together.
There was an unspoken chemistry between Harry and Adelayde. Neither of them ever had some one so close...in this way. Neither of them could properly put into words what they felt for each other, and although they never spoke of it, they both knew it was there.
They talked a lot. Harry had been slow to open up at first, but soon enough he spoke of everything to Adelayde. He told her how he had grown up at the Dursleys' and how he had to fight Voldemort in the past. Harry was surprised when Adelayde told him to stop talking about it because it made her uncomfortable. When Harry asked why, she told him it was because she didn't like to think of him getting hurt....This surprised Harry a great deal because anyone else would have been eager to speak of his past.
One day, when the two of them (Hermione was off to class and Ron was off looking for Scabbers) were alone in the Common Room sitting next to each other on the floor watching the fire Harry said, "Adelayde?"
"Mhhmmm?" she responded, not looking up from her book. She was reading Quidditch: Through The Ages, Harry had lent it to her.
"I was thinking...or rather wandering....Can..."Harry laughed, as though he were embarrassed.
Adelayde looked up at him and met his gaze. "What is it Harry? You know you can tell me anything."
Harry nodded and took a deep breath before saying "Can I call you Adel?"
Adelayde paused. No one had ever called her by a nickname before. She didn't really like nicknames. But this one....she liked....probably just because it was Harry that was calling her it. She smiled and tackle-hugged him, causing him to fall backwards onto the floor, her on top of his chest.
"Of course," she said and playfully pecked him on the cheek. When she tried to pull away Harry put his hands in her hair and gently pulled her into him, their lips smooching against each other until they had to pull apart in order to breathe.
Adelayde sat up and Harry stood. She didn't know how to act or what to do, she had never kissed anyone before.
Without looking at her, Harry turned and walked straight up to the boy's dormitory.
~~~~~~~~~

Three weeks had passed since the kiss, and Harry hadn't even so much as looked at Adelayde let alone spoken to her. She felt like such a fool. She had only meant her kiss as a playful peck...But Harry had been the one to pull her closer....

Adelayde tried talking to Hermione but she was so busy disappearing off to class and then reappearing that it was hard to say more than a few words. And Adelayde couldn't go to Ron. He was ALWAYS with Harry. And because of that, she couldn't even get time to TRY talking to Harry.

So, for three weeks Adelayde was basically on her own. Having to find her own way. her grandmother had begun to worry and was often keeping Adelayde after class to ask her if everything was okay. Of course Adelayde didn't tell Minerva what had happened. That would have gotten Harry into a WHOLE lot of trouble.

~~~~~~~~
"Are you ready?" Hermione asked.
Adelayde looked at herself in the mirror. Her short blond hair hung semi-straight and covered the left side of her face. She was dressed in a pair of frayed jeans and a black tank top. Over the tank she wore a faded old blue hoodie.
"I suppose." She said, still unsure of whether or not she wanted to go. She knew Harry couldn't go. Up until the time they had stopped talking they had spent ever Saturday together, while everyone else went to Hogsmeade.
"Well come on then. Let's go!" Hermione shoved Adelayde through the door and led her down to the Common Room where Ron was waiting for them.
"Ron, where's Harry?" Hermione asked as Ron led them to the Portrait Hole and down the corridor.
"Dunno. He had asked what I was doing today and I told him that we were all going to Hogsmeade with the rest of them. He asked where Adelayde was and I told him I didn't know but that she was going with us to Hogsmeade. He just stormed off after that."
Adelayde froze. Harry had asked about her? And seemed upset...."Umm, I'm don't think I'm going to go. I dont feel well...." Adelayde turned around to head back to the dormitory but Hermione grabbed her by the arm and said "Oh no you don't! You're going!"
The three of them were silent until Ron decided to ask the question Adelayde had been dreading. "So what happened between you and Harry anyways?"
As they walked thorugh Hogsmeade, making their way through the various shops and places of interest, Adelayde told them about everything that had happened.
"After he stormed off I didn't know what to do. I mean...he kissed me, not the other way around. I really adore Harry, I'm just so afriad that he's angry with me." Adelayde finished talking as they made their way through a small group of trees, that ended abruptly and revealed the Shreiking Shack.
Hermione opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by a high pitched scream coming from Adelayde as someone jumped out from the tree behind her and grabbed her, forcing her to the ground.
Looking up into the sneering face of Draco (who was holding her to the ground) Adelayde tried kicking and screaming to get free but she couldn't.
"So you got feelings for Scarhead, eh? I can fix that-" Draco was cut off when he was suddenly yanked off of her and thrown across the ground towards the Schreiking Shack.
Draco stood, cursing and ran off into the trees, just as Harry pulled the Invisibillity Cloak off. He walked over to Adelayde and pulled her up, dusting the snow off as he did so. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah thanks to you-"
Hermione interupted, "Harry! What on earth...How....How did you get here?!"
"Let's just say I had a little help from the twins." Harry answered with a mischevious look on his face. "Listen, why don't you and Ron go ahead and head back to school. I want some time with Adelayde so we can talk."
Hermioned sighed and she and Ron turned and made their way back through the trees.
Harry put his arms around Adelayde's waist pulling her closer to him and said "I'm so sorry for treating you so badly these past few weeks....I just....I didn't know how to react....I didn't really think when I kissed you..."
Adelayde looked up into Harry's bright green eyes. "It's alright...I felt the same way."
There was an ackward silence between the two that ended with Harry saying "How about we pretend the whole thing never happened...." He leaned down and kissed her on the forehead then continued "I still like you but...I don't think it's the right time..."
This took Adelayde by surprise. "This is because of Sirius Black isn't it?"
Harry didn't answer he just threw the Cloak over their heads and said "Come on. I'll show you the passage to Hogwarts underneath Honey Duke's."
WOW! Thanks.
And just so everyone knows...it may be a while before the next chapter is up....there are some bad family problems going on right now. and my family MUST be my first priority. Hopefull everything will be okay, but right now everything is sort of on a hold.
Keep posting and keep the story alive, and I promise I will continue as soon as possible.
